Newport's Social Scene

 

There are a fair few pubs in Newport and around, so, in no particular order, here they are. Want to eat? Have a look at the Places to Eat page - click the link at the bottom.
A few quick words: Newport's Pubs are all pretty mint, and you will soon find a favourite. Most are pretty much just pubs, except The Barley & Central Square - which are more club like (Central Square is a club).
Generally speaking, there's never any trouble, security (if any) are usually pretty good and your more than likely to stay out longer than what you intended!!

 

Ozzy's Wine Bar

 

Well, have you had a drink in a wine bar once owned by the world famous Ozzy Osbourne? Thought not!
A hit and a 'must visit' for the students when out and about, Ozzy's is long, narrow, always full of students and is plastered in 60s American memorabilia. Often the place where a pub crawl starts, and later finishes...
Deb's is a legend, so drinks here are a must, and on a hot summers day there's nothing better than sitting outside on the Church Wall having a quiet beer or two.
Other than that, you will have to experience the specials that are availible by yourself, in your own time... you know you want to.

The Phez

 

Owned by Quinny (another legend), & also the footy team coach, the Pheasant Inn is a favourite with all the students. With good deals and a great atmosphere, the Phez is guaranteed to be full on a Wednesday night; before hitching the minibus up to Harper.
(Quinney drives the Harper minibus between the pub and Harper as a shuttle bus, for free, on Wednesdays. Great service).
Large sports screens ensure you won't miss any of the action, whatever it may be, and the beer garden is a favourite all year round (unless it's raining or snowing...).
With a two sided bar and quick staff, it's not usually long till your've got a drink in your hand; but don't quote me on that once it's busy! A pool table, table footy and jukeboxes will keep you entertained, as well as all the usual pub banter that you will find in any pub.
With a walkway out the back into the rear of the Somerfield car park, those who aren't drinking can park up there; usually with ease.
The Phez is one of those places where you are bound to bump into someone you either recognise or know at Harper. It's great!

 

Phez

The Barley

 

The most modern of the pubs in Newport, it has late opening times Thursdays to Saturdays (3am), so its a hit with the later drinkers. With comfy sofas and a good sized dance floor, if there isn't anything on at Harper, this is one place you will find a dance floor!
The Barley has a medium length bar, turning a corner to face the dance floor. Guest DJ's usually entertain you on a busy weekend.
With a more 'quiet' end, and the dance floor at the other, you will find a suitable spot to match your mood. The Barley usually has security on the later nights - most definitely no ID, no entry!!
Entertainment, other than the dance floor, is minimal. TV's are dotted here and there to give you something to watch if you so wish, but it's unlikely you will on your own without a bunch of mates to make your own entertainment.

 

  

The Shake

 

Situated right next door to the Phez, you cant miss it. The Shakespeare is a small pub, mostly frequented by locals than students, but we always visit on a night out.
The pub has a pool table, and is brilliant if you want to have a quiet social pint with just one or two of you.
The Shake also has a few outdoor seats which are useful if it's a lovely hot day.

 

  

The Bridge

 

A very nice pub, they do a well priced and tasty Sunday roast, along with a selection of other meals. Usually the football is on TV on a Saturday & Sunday afternoon, and Sunday nights usually offer a quiz, and are said to be very good.
A decked area out the back is good for the summer, and a good casual pint is usally the type had here.
   

The Railway Tavern

 

With a covered outdoor sitting area, sport on the TV, a good English Ale and a comfy chair, the Railway is excellent for a quick pint or a lazy afternoon watching the world go speeding on by.
Of course, we always visit on any pub crawl, much to the landlord's delight, and other patrons' amusement and as with most of Newports pubs, they're a friendly bunch.

 

The Kings Head

 

At the Harper end of the Highstreet, on Chetwynd End, The Kings Head is a very nice pub. Quiet, which is ace if you want to escape students, the pub offers a pool table and the usual ranges of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
Not many students come here, as it's out of the 'main' high street area and is seen as too much of a trek, but so long as your polite (as always), no one will mind you having a pint in here. Or two. Or three.

 

The Swan

 

Always trying to get more Harper Students in to drink thier tasty alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages, and cash in on us, The Swan is a quaint place, with a feeling of being a bit behind the times, which makes it a good place to relax. We always visit on a pub crawl!
I always seem to find that there are a few old gentlemen in there with wide eyed faces at what the ladies are wearing and are always sharing a friendly joke or sat there doing what students also do very well - drink beer.
Not much more to say really, you can only see for yourselves! So go have a visit!

 

Central Square Nightclub

 

Central Square is a good laugh with your mates, with a dance floor in the middle and the bar at the back. When you go through the front door, you head up the stairs for the dance floor and bar, or head downstairs to the loo.
Usually a couple of quid to get in, with discount with a flyer, and monday nights seem to be turning into Harper Nights, which is grand, giving us yet another excuse for a night out on the tiles!
Drinks aren't as cheap as they can be, but if you keep to the deals and have a few before hand then you won't have an expensive night.
All round: A good night, great music to lose your head too and make a fool of yourself and often good prizes if they're going!
